David Field, FAICD
*Chairman

David has extensive Board Chairmanship, Non Executive Director & Chief Executive experience gained from a 40 year corporate career at both national and international level within the Maritime Industry.

In November 2017 he was inducted into the Australian Maritime Hall of Fame. His shipping career was with the International Shipping Companies, Blue Star Line (The Vestey Group, UK) 1990-98 and previously The Swire Group, 1970-90. He stepped down as Managing Director & CEO of Blue Star Line (Aust) Pty Ltd & Chairman of Blue Star Asia Pty Ltd in 1998, following the Groups international sale to the P&O Group (UK).

He took up a second career with two Sydney based International Search & Selection Companies, including two years as Australian Head of an Interim Executive Practice and a period as Acting Managing Partner in Seoul Korea, where he had previously lived (1980-84) as Country Representative Shipping during his time with the Swire Group.

In 2000 he formed his own company Field & Associates Pty Ltd specializing in senior level Executive Search and Consulting in Corporate Governance & Business Strategy.

He joined the Board of The Merchant Navy War Memorial Fund (MNWMF) in 2004 and was appointed Chairman by the previous Directors in 2014 and with their agreement appointed a new Board.

He maintains a very active interest in many areas of the Australian Shipping Industry among them being Associate Member Shipping Australia Ltd, The Australian Maritime Museum and was, from 2012-2016, Chairman of the Judging Panel of the Lloyds List Australia annual Shipping & Maritime Awards. Other memberships include Associate Member Company of Master Mariners of Australia and Affiliate Member Merchant Navy RSL Sub Branch

Among his other current appointments is a member since 2013 of the Metropolitan Sydney Committee of The Defence Reserves Support Council of NSW (DRSC).

 Sean Barrett, RNZN (Rtd)

*General Manager, Business Development – Asia Pacific & Australasia, DP World

Sean started his career as an officer of the Royal New Zealand Navy, serving for 8 years before moving to London to begin a new career in commercial shipping with Blue Star Line Ltd.

He worked as Projects Manager in London for 5 years, before transferring to Sydney as Line Manager of the newly acquired Bridge Line, operating between Australia, Japan, Korea and China. Following the acquisition of Blue Star Line by P&O Nedlloyd, Sean moved into stevedoring with P&O Ports, where he undertook assignments in China and Indonesia, before returning to Sydney as Commercial Director for P&O Ports Australia.

The acquisition of P&O Ports by DP World in 2006 took Sean to the USA as Commercial Director – Americas Region for DP World, covering a network of container terminals in both North and South America. Following his return to Australia in 2011, Sean worked for both Patrick Stevedores and later Swire Shipping, before re-joining DP World in 2019, where he is currently General Manager Business Development for DP World Asia Pacific & Australasia Region, based in Sydney.

Sean has an MBA from Macquarie University and is qualified as a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

Capt. Ted van Bronswijk

*Retired as Senior Master Svitzer Australia in 2020

Ted is a highly experienced Master who holds Master 1 unlimited Australian and British certificates of competence. He has local knowledge exemptions for Sydney Harbour, Port Botany and Port Kembla. After 18 years of blue water experience his recent seagoing experience includes significant maritime projects including:

Towage of HMS Nottingham after a serious grounding. International deliveries of tugs in Asian waters and between distant ports around Australia.

Estuarine navigation projects involving 300 tonne barges, long river transits and as Master of Sydney ferries Jetcat evacuated people from bushfire ravaged communities.

Key organizer in the inter agency safety exercises “What If’s”: a seminar focusing on hypothetical high risk situations in Sydney Ports.

Ted is also Sydney Branch Master of the Company of Master Mariners and is Federal Master of the Company. He is the Company representative for joint projects and the sole proprietor of Aspect Marine Services a consultancy specializing in shallow water navigation and maritime safety.

Stephen Westfield, B.Comm, MBA

Stephen started his professional career in Sydney, in 2007, working as an Accountant, Tax & Audit professional with Accounting & Business Advisors, CBC Partners.He then took up an appointment as a Client Investment Manager with global financial services firm State Street Bank as an investment representative.

In 2011, drawn to the Iron Ore Boom in Western Australia, he moved to Port Hedland, being subsequently appointed Team Leader, Port Operations with Qube Port and Bulk, a Division of Qube Holdings Ltd, Australia’s largest integrated provider of import and export logistics services.

Returning to Sydney in 2015, he joined the operations division of German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd, a global leader in Container Shipping.

In 2016, Stephen took up the appointment as Trade Manager for the Pacific Islands with Swire Shipping, the brand name of the liner shipping services operated by The China Navigation Company Pte Ltd (CNCo). In 2018, he was promoted to senior Trade Manger for Australia/Asia being responsible for container and break bulk services with budgeted cargo over $30 million per annum. Most recently, he moved into the role of Commercial Manager for Mining and Resources negotiating and executing large shipping contracts with mining customers across the Pacific including the development of a new shipping service through West Australia.

Stephen holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Macquarie University and a MBA majoring in maritime logistics from Australian Maritime College.

He is the Immediate Past Chairman of Young Shipping Australia (YSA) NSW. YSA is a non-profit organisation developed for young professionals within the shipping industry. Established in 2007 and guided by the YSA NSW Committee, Young Shipping Australia has provided the shipping community with regular educational and social events targeted at the ‘under 35s’ age group.

Ms. Catherine Linley, B. Engineering

* Senior Port Marine Surveyor, Marine Casualty Officer & Examiner of Masters & Mates, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), Adelaide.

Catherine started her life sailing in the UK on a boat her parents built. Her family graduated to the 36′ ketch and completed a 4-year partial circumnavigation of the world in 1987. This experience set the course for a career at sea. The Royal Navy didn’t accept women navigators, so Catherine joined the Merchant Navy.

 
Over 13 years Catherine worked as a Navigating Officer on a range of vessels including Container Ships, Tankers, Ferries, and Specialist Vessels. During this time, she qualified as a Master Mariner, completed a Bachelor of Engineering degree, and qualified as a private airplane pilot.
 
Whilst working for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (the civilian support branch of the Royal Navy, providing vital logistical & operational support to the RN military operations) she met her future husband and in 2002, they relocated to Canberra. Catherine fulfilled a goal of becoming a Senior Marine Surveyor with AMSA & taking up a policy role, as Principal Advisor – Cargo. This led to a two-year London appointment, as the Secretary of the Dangerous Goods, Solid Cargoes and Containers (DSC) Sub-committee at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
 
Returning to Australia in 2009 with her husband and a young son the family settled on the coast in Adelaide where Catherine’s family is based. A keen sailor, Catherine has competed in the Fastnet Yacht Race and two Sydney to Hobart races. In 1996 she won the Jane Tait Memorial Trophy as the top placed female skipper.
 
A passionate advocate of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Catherine committed to grass roots mentoring, role modelling and advocacy particularly for young woman and those who want to enter the Maritime Industry.

Mr. Dan Crumlin

*ITF Inspector NSW, International Transport Workers Federation (ITF)

 

Dan has worked in various roles within the Australian Maritime Industry, from working inshore in the Tugboat Industry and from there on Barges and Offshore Crew Transfer Vessels.

He then went to sea as an Integrated Rating/Able Seamen in the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry and served on a wide range of vessels.

Coming ashore he worked on the wharves as a Docker. He takes pride, in that during this period & subsequently, his commitment to safety has been his number one priority.

 
Throughout his career he has been a member of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) where he has gained a thorough understanding of how important it is that every job site, is safe site. Such knowledge has held him in good stead to be elected to represent maritime workers at all levels of the industry.
 

He became an elected Jobs Delegate, as well as Occupational Health and Safety Representative. He has also served as committee member of various committees, Collective Bargaining Representative status, MUA Youth Chairman and relieving Union official.

Dan comes from a seafaring and maritime family, his grandfather Joe Crumlin, was a Foreign Going Master (now retired), my father Kieran Crumlin, drives the Pilot Cutter in Botany Bay, and his uncle, Paddy Crumlin, is the National Secretary of the MUA and President of the International Transport Federation (ITF). His brother Jed is a seafarer currently having just finished his Second Mates Certificates after going to sea has an Integrated Rating.

Stan MoriartyMr. Stan Moriarty

Stan commenced his employment as a trainee accountant in 1970 with a small firm of chartered accountants.  Following his qualification as a chartered accountant and registration as a company auditor in 1992 he became a partner of the firm.

In 1998 his partner retired, and Stan became the principal of the firm Pringle Moriarty & Co.  At this time John Pringle, his former partner, resigned as secretary of the MNWMF and the Sydney Bethel Union (SBU).  Stan was then appointed secretary of both organisations and has continued to occupy those positions since that time.  In 2006 he was appointed secretary of Australian Mariners Welfare Society (AMWS) a position he currently holds.

In 2018 Stan retired from practicing as a company auditor and in June 2021 passed his accounting and taxation practice to his daughter while continuing to maintain his positions as secretary with MNWMF, SBU and AMWS.
