Australian Merchant Navy Roll of Honour
at the Australian National War Memorial (AWM) Canberra

On Saturday 17th October 1998, His Excellency The Hon. Sir William Deane, AC KBE, 22nd Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia unveiled the Australian Merchant Seamans Roll of Honour

AUSTRALIAN MERCHANT SEAMAN ROLL OF HONOUR

Within the ‘Sculpture Garden’ of the Australian War Memorial (AWM)

The sculpture ‘Survivors’ was designed by Dennis Adams who was a war artist in WWII. The sculpture was cast in Sydney & acquired by the AWM
in 1973

The Honour Roll is formed around the central block of three large concrete and stone structures in the sculpture garden on the west side of the main AWM building. The north & south sides of the block carry Bronze Plaques, recording the names & respective ships of the 862 Australian Merchant Mariners that sacrificed their lives for their country in WWI (184) & WWII (678). On the west side of the block is a bronze sculpture depicting men helping others into a rubber raft. Below the sculpture is a flat surface of polished black granite in the centre of which is a circular light for illuminating the work.

Inscription on lower left hand corner of the flat surface of the sculpture reads:

This memorial commemorates the service and sacrifice of Australian merchant seamen who manned ships in all parts of the world during the First and Second World Wars.

The support these men provided was vital to the success of the war effort.

Merchant ships carried vital supplies and troops but were vulnerable to enemy attack because they were generally slow, poorly armed and often loaded with dangerous cargoes.

ODE OF REMEMBRANCE

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

Response

We will remember them

Lest we forget

Merchant Service War Badge Australia

Australian WWI Merchant Service War Badge 1914-1918, issued by the Commonwealth Government to Australian Merchant Marine sailors for services rendered at sea during WWI.

The Australian Merchant Navy WWI Honour Roll records the names of 184 Merchant Navy seamen and their respective vessels.

Remembrance Day Sydney Opera HouseThe image of the iconic Sydney Opera House illuminated with poppies is now world-famous thanks to Mascot RSL Sub-Branch member, Paul Graham – who in 2015 convinced the Sydney City Councilman, Opera House Trust & NSW Government, to provide the image each Remembrance Day (11th November).

The POPPY is the enduring symbol of remembrance of WWI and its origin lies in the landscapes of WWI. In 1915, the flower inspired Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae to write the most loved and treasured poem, “In Flanders Fields”.

AUSTRALIAN MERCHANT SEAMAN WHO GAVE OF THEIR LIVES
FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN WWII

(3 September 1939 – 2 September 1945)

Australian Merchant Navy Badge WW11

Australia Merchant Navy Badge issued by the Commonwealth Government to members of the Australian Merchant Navy for services rendered at sea during WWII.

The Australian Merchant Navy Honour Roll records the names of 678 Merchant Navy Seamen and their respective vessels.

SINKING OF THE CENTAUR, 2/3RD AUSTRALIAN HOSPITAL SHIP (AHS),

The Hospital Ship (AHS) CENTAUR, was a motor passenger ship converted in early 1943 for use as a hospital ship. In November 1941 it had rescued survivors of the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran after it had sunk and been sunk by HMAS Sydney.

On 12 May 1943 the Centaur sailed unescorted from Sydney at 0945 hours carrying her crew and normal staff, as well as stores and equipment of the 2/12th Field Ambulance but no patients. It was sunk without warning by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine on 14 May 1943 at approximately 0400 hours, its position being approximately 27°17′ S, 153°58′ E about 50 miles east north-east of Brisbane.

Of the 332 medical personnel and civilian crew aboard, 268 were killed, including 63 of the 65 army personnel. These survivors spent 35 hours on rafts before being rescued. Sister Ellen Savage, the only one of twelve nursing sisters on board to survive, though injured herself, gave great help to the other survivors and was awarded the George Medal for this work.

The ship had been appropriately lit and marked to indicate that it was a hospital ship and its sinking was regarded as an atrocity. The Australian Government delivered an official protest to Japan over the incident. The Japanese did not acknowledge responsibility for the incident for many years and the War Crimes Tribunal could not identify the responsible submarine. However, the Japanese official war history makes clear that it was submarine 1-177, under the command of Lt Commander Nakagawa who had sunk the Centaur. Lt Commander Nakagawa was convicted as a war criminal for firing on survivors of the British Chivalry which his ship had sunk in the Indian Ocean.

CENTAUR FOUND

Since the end of the war, many people have pushed to locate Centaur as a way of providing some solace to those family and friends who had lost loved ones, and to possibly answer some the unresolved questions surrounding its sinking.

A search led by David Mearns, who had previously lead the team that found the wrecks of HMAS Sydney and HSK Kormoran, discovered Centaur’s wreck on 20 December 2009. Centaur was located about 30 nautical miles off the southern tip of Moreton Island, off Queensland’s south-east coast.

The wreck was in one piece although it appears as though the hull broke in at least one, and maybe two, places. Centaur’s approximate position is 27˚ 16.98’S, 153˚ 59.22’E at a depth of over 2,000 metres. The ship’s location is less than 1 nautical mile (1.85 kilometres) from that calculated by the navigator, 2nd Mate Gordon Rippon, who was on the bridge taking regular bearings the night Centaur was torpedoed.

The wreck is protected by the Australian government’s Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976. The site is a memorial to the lives that were lost.

2/3 AHS CENTAUR (FINAL RESTING PLACE) MEMORIAL

A bronze dedication plaque located on the site of the final resting place of the AHS. The plaque is dedicated to their sacrifice and was initiated by the 2/3 AHS Centaur Association on the 12 January 2010. The memorial plaque was laid on the foredeck of Centaur and under a special dispensation to the Historic Shipwrecks Act.

The plaque is unique in that it incorporates a digital ‘Roll of Honour’, listing the names of the casualties of the disaster and contributions made by the relatives and associated parties. The site is considered a ‘war grave’ and thus should remain in perpetuity.
